Why I bought my first home in the Andalucían hills
MAY 2026 · 6 MIN READ

There's a version of investing the men in suits won't teach you: the one where the house also has to feel like yours. Where the south-facing terrace matters as much as the rental yield, and the walk to the bakery matters as much as the cap rate.
I bought my first home in a white village in the Sierra Bermeja, two hours from Málaga airport and a world away from everything I'd been told property had to be. It wasn't the safest spreadsheet decision on paper — and yet, three years later, it's the best one I've ever made.
Here's what the numbers actually said. Properties in pueblos blancos within 90 minutes of the coast have appreciated 38–52% since 2021. Tourist demand for slow-travel destinations is outpacing the costa. And the entry point — €120k–€250k for a habitable stone house — leaves room for a renovation that genuinely adds value, not just Instagram appeal.
But the part nobody writes down: a home you actually want to be in pays a dividend the spreadsheet can't price. Peace. A place to land. A reason to come home.
If you're considering your first Andalucían home, my advice is simple. Go inland. Go quiet. Buy the house that makes your shoulders drop the moment you walk in. The numbers, surprisingly often, will follow.
